Nokia, Amazon settle video technology patent dispute
Nokia and Amazon have resolved their worldwide patent fight over video streaming technologies. The settlement involves the utilization of Nokia’s video technologies within Amazon’s streaming devices and services, essentially closing all existing legal conflicts between the two companies. The terms of the settlement will not be disclosed.
Nokia brought suit against Amazon in October 2023, in many jurisdictions, such as the United States, Germany, India, the United Kingdom, and the European Unified Patent Court. Nokia accused Amazon of patent infringement covering video compression, content transport, content recommendation, and multiple hardware features of its Prime Video and Twitch streaming services.
As a counter, Amazon filed a countersuit in the United States against Nokia, stating that Nokia had violated its cloud computing patents. In February 2025, a court in Germany ruled in favor of Nokia, stating that Amazon had misused Nokia’s technology without a license and questioned Amazon’s video streaming services in Germany.
The agreement involves a long-term patent pact, through which Amazon will leverage Nokia’s video technologies in both its streaming offerings and devices. This is a solution to the call to ensure fair payment for patent holders in maintaining the innovation in the technology sector.
