Hero Future Energies unveils green hydrogen blending plant
Hero Future Energies (HFE) has commissioned a trailblazing green hydrogen plant in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, in partnership with Rockman Industries. The plant combines green hydrogen blending with Piped Natural Gas (PNG) and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for industrial furnace use, with the aim of significantly reducing carbon emissions.
The plant, which has invested ₹1,000 crore, is projected to create about 2,000 jobs. It has an initial production capacity of 25 tonnes of green hydrogen per annum and plans to ramp it up to 54 tonnes per annum. The project will reduce CO2 emissions by 206 tonnes a year and liberate 190-195 tonnes of oxygen in the atmosphere, leading to a reduction in emissions by 8-10%.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu inaugurated the plant virtually, highlighting the state’s commitment to leading India’s green energy revolution. He stated that the project is in accordance with the Swarnandhra Vision-2047, aimed at making Andhra Pradesh a world leader for renewable energy and green hydrogen production. The state’s Integrated Clean Energy (ICE) Policy 2024 targets the addition of more than 160 GW of renewable energy capacity and ₹10 trillion worth of investments in the next five years.
The replicable model, introduced in Tirupati, has the promise to be spread to other sectors in Andhra Pradesh that are hard to abate and at a national level. The 300 kW PEM electrolyser-fed plant uses a 1.1 MWp solar rooftop farm as the energy source to mix 8-10% of hydrogen with LPG and 3% with PNG.
This program showcases HFE’s dedication to industrial decarbonization through presenting a creative solution for industries to reduce emissions. It also emphasizes the proactive strategy of Andhra Pradesh in supporting India’s net-zero achievement by 2070 and minimizing dependency on fossil fuels to enhance energy security.
