Mitsubishi declines Honda-Nissan merger involvement
The Yomiuri Shimbun reports Mitsubishi Motors will not join Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co.’s planned merger. Mitsubishi intends to maintain its existing organizational framework while striving to boost its market position in Southeast Asia.
Because Mitsubishi stands smaller than Honda and Nissan it has stated reservations about effectively steering management decisions within the future joint holding entity. Following its choice to not participate in the merger Mitsubishi maintains strategic alliances with Honda and Nissan as it continues independent listing in the market.
Honda and Nissan announced their intention to merge during December 2024 followed by their plan to create a joint holding company by August 2026. The combination targets to boost market competitiveness as the automotive space grows rapidly with a particular emphasis on electric vehicle production.
