Reliance Industries plans to acquire a stake in Dharma Productions

Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries is reportedly in talks to acquire a stake in Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. This potential deal reflects Reliance’s strategy to strengthen its presence in the Indian entertainment industry, especially with the rise of OTT (over-the-top) platforms and changing consumer behavior. Dharma Productions, which is 90.7% owned by Karan Johar and 9.24% owned by his mother Hiru Johar, is best known for producing some of Bollywood’s biggest hits like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Student of the Year and Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem lyrics, among others and so on.

The Bollywood film industry has faced major challenges in recent years, including rising production costs and dwindling theater attendance, prompting companies like Dharma to look for strategic affordable investments Johar has reportedly been looking for ways to cash in on his stake in Dharma for some time now. Once completed, the deal will mark another major addition to Reliance’s expanding media portfolio, which already includes minority stakes in Jio Studios, Viacom18 Studios, and Balaji Telefilms.

The move comes at a time when the Hindi film industry is undergoing a transformation due to increasing competition from OTT platforms due to the impact of the pandemic.
